skins episode 8

it has been announced that they are recasting the whole program after series 2, and will do every 2 years. At first I was annoyed, but with the character centric format of each episode, there is little more to develop for most of the characters. Im sure we know everything about Sid, Michelle, Tony, Anwar, Cassie at least leaving Jal, Chris, Maxxie, Effy and Sketch. I hope some of the old characters still appear in the next series, at least in cameo roles.
Episode 7 (Effy) was one of my favourite from this series for sure, and that was without much of Chris, Jal and Maxxie (i.e. 3 best).
Episode 8 is Jal centric, and looks like it will be another great episode, finally addressing Jal being preggers.

death cab for cutie 6music session

Ive been away, so this is a few days late...here is the new official album artwork, and it might get tired that i say everything by death cab is amazing, but i really love this artwork, cubism ftw!

They did a 6music session this week, playing new song Cath and classic Title and Registration.
Cath
Title and Registration

both songs and interview (thanks to jesusthepixie off dancingjesus)

Cath sounds so good, and, out of about 5 live versions i have of title and registration, this is the best.
Aparently Narrow Stairs is out May 26th in the UK, 2 weeks later than the US.
"london in early july i think" but ben didnt seem sure, please before the 11th!!!

cape cod kwassa kwassa

i cant believe this is my first Vampire Weekend centric post!! i just found these remixes and thought id share. Vampire Weekend are such a good band, wish I was seeing them in april/may when they tour the UK (no Sheffield date, and too close to exams for Leeds). it is refreshing to hear something original and influenced by non Western bands i.e. African music in the indie scene. "Walcott" was on Skins as well this week, the first song when they showed Tony going to the uni! This song is far from the best on their self-titled debut, but its still very very goood.Big things to come from this band.

madonna & justin timberlake & timbaland

This is the pretty highly anticipated Madonna and Justin Timberlake collaboration from her upcoming album. I quite like it, i thought that it would only be good with a good producer, and Timbaland produced it, so its good. he does have the ability to give mediocre artists good songs (e.g. 50 cent-ayo technlogy, nelly furtado-promiscuous girl). Even the vocals are dominated by Timberlake. I would post the album artwork, but it is sick and wrong. Madonna is 50ish, she thinks shes 20, enough said.

Old Skool Monday #2

"Panic" is a song by The Smiths. It was released by the band as a single in 1986, reaching #11 in the UK Singles Chart, and did not appear on a regular studio album; it has since been included on several of the band's compilation albums. In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Panic" at number 21 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever"

Last week was rock and roll, this week is for sure an indie classic.

José González megapost

José González is really very good. If you don't know him, then he is an acoustic singer-songwriter from Sweden, of Argentine descent, and likes doing acoustic covers as well as writing his own, very insightful lyrics. I have hard many good things about his live performances, and im seeing him at Leadmill in April. I dont think its sold out yet, have a look here! He has two albums, im not sure which one is better, here is a selection of both.
Album #1- Veneer
Heartbeats-you will have heard this, it was on a sony bravia advert a few years ago, its a brilliant acoustic cover of a great song. I uploaded it because both songs sound completely different, musically and vocally. Here it is: The Knife-Heartbeats
And also, Kanye West's tour DJ (a-trak) remixed this song (The original) one of Kanye's best tracks, Get Em High. It really is something special.
Crosses-back to topic, here is another of "Veneer"s singles, its been on lots of stuff, notably the OC
Lovestain- another tune
Album #2-In our Nature
On first listen, i wasnt too keen on this album, but now i really like it, aparently its really influenced by Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion which I am excited about reading soon.
Down the line- single no.1 from this album, with acoustic driving rythm pretty characteristic of this album.
Killing for love-my personal favourite from the album, very strong lyrics. zane lowe has been loving this track recently, maybe it will get released.
Teardrop-Massive Attacks version is just one of those songs that if you cover, you have to do it 100% right, because if you get it wrong it is just shocking, and the orignal is such a classic that it is ruined by a crap cover version. This one works not only because its acoustic (Newton Faulkner also did an acoustic cover of this song-it was shocking) but José González's voice and intonation adds so much. Its obviously not as good as the original, so i thought i'd post it here for good measure.
Woah, that was tiring. come back tomorrow for old skool monday #2 and #3 (im away next monday).

if you are who you say you are

Superstar has been around for ages and ages, but this remix is new i think, and its really good. Lupe absolutely kills it, he is really lyrically talented, if you've listened to "The Cool" then he really knows what hes talking about. This remix features 2 rappers i dont really like, young jeezy and TI but its still gooood. thought id give you the original as well.

i cant believe i missed this

...due to lack of funds. and i didnt even know about the special guest until now, even though it happened in december. When i saw Kanye West in February 2006 in Manchester, he was touring his weakest album, and was supported by 1xtra djs. and then when he returned in December 2007, he was supported by Common, touring his best produced album, and gets a very very very special guest. i wish i had a time machine for this...
Kanye West and Jay-Z-Encore (live at Manchester MEN)

and a really badly recorded all falls down...

saying that, he was brilliant when i saw him, and he always puts on an amazing live show...

dirtysexymoney

from wikipedia

"The show follows Nick George, whose whole life has been lived in the shadow of the Darling family, but as an adult he's leading the perfect life as an idealistic lawyer, until his father's suspicious death. The absurdly wealthy Darlings of New York have asked him to take over his father's job as their personal lawyer, but the money that will allow him the freedom to be an altruistic do-gooder is only part of the picture. That same money pulls him into the dubious doings of the Darling clan. Power, privilege and family money are a volatile cocktail."

There have been loads of adverts on c4/e4 for this, starts at the end of the month, looks quality imo. Its gonna be tough for me to resist downloading this. If you noticed, the advert features a certain LCD soundsystem song making it all the more exciting for me...

Yeah this is one of the best songs ever... and im pretty sure from the whoreing Zane Lowe has been giving it will get a UK release, quite rightfully. If for some reason you haven't heard Graduation yet, then download! also, this remix is really good, im sure djs will love it in hip-hop clubs, its been around for ages now but it basically speeds it up a bit to great effects. R Kelly did a remix of it as well but its shit, so its not gettin posted here. Oh yeah a Homecoming video is also coming out soon, as the song is getting a US release...

friendly fires

One of my top tips for 2008 (after vampire weekend, mgmt, marling, lightspeed champion). They have some really good songs, quite dancey, quite indie, a little bit calvin harris but better and less annoying. I think they might get quite big coz some of their stuff is pretty radio friendly. They are also playing to Crystal Castles (shit, featured on skins) on the NME new music tour, and Team Waterpolo are also playing, not coming to Sheffield though.

Anyway, here is probably my favourite of their songs, on board and a good, long remix from nightmoves. im pretty sure Zane Lowe, Colin murray and Annie Mac have been playing then so you may have heard this.

Old Skool Monday #1

I decided i wanted my blog to have a regular feature, the classic album thing kindof failed, so i thought why not have a "classic tune" type thing every monday. The only criteria is that it has to be more than 5 years old i.e pre-2003, and it has to be good.

Kicking it off with a bang...yeah its cheesy to the max but its also so so good... No-one is too cool for some Elvis!!

"Heartbreak Hotel" is a rock and roll song performed by Elvis Presley, with Bill Black (bass), Scotty Moore (guitar), D.J. Fontana (drums), Floyd Cramer (piano) and Elvis on rhythm guitar as the main supporting musicians. Recorded in January 1956 in Nashville, the song introduced Presley to the American national music consciousness. It was released as a single with the b-side song "I Was The One" on January 27, 1956. "Heartbreak Hotel" became the first No.1 pop record by Elvis and was the best selling single of 1956."

Brain Thrust Mastery

The new We Are Scientists album has leaked. We Are scientists are such a good band, and Keith Murray is one of my favourite lyricists (after Gibbard, Turner, Morissey, Oberst, Skinner etc) and his songwriting skills are vastly underrated. Alot of "With love and Squalor" is really introspective and BTM continues those themes, opening with Ghouls, and the line "we all recognise that i'm the problem here". Im not gonna do a full album review or anytthing (i know my limits) but hopefully Sean will post one here sometime soon...
Here are a couple of songs of the new album, Ghouls and the new single After Hours. If you have the money then i would strongly advise buying this album when it comes out on March 17th!

the go! team

Went to see these last night and they were so good, completely different atmosphere from the indie gigs i usually go to, and lots of fun. Ninja is such a good frontwoman, she is so energetic and gets the crowd going. Their music is also great, really original and pretty innovative, i think. I first heard them a long time ago, hearing Everyone's a VIP... on steve lamacq i think and instantly loving it. Ive always really liked the first album (Thinder Lightning Strike), but when Proof Of youth came out last summer i didn't really rate it. However, having listened to it loads in the last couple of weeks, i think i completely underrated it at first, and its a very good album imo. Here are a few of my favourite tracks
From "Thunder Lightning Strike"
From "Proof of Youth"
i would definately advise going to see them if you have the chance

skins/shameless/

1. Skins S02E03
episode 3 was possibly my favourite ever skins episode. this series has progressively got better and better and the directing, producing and acting has improved loads since series 1. The story was deeply centred around Sid (Mike Bailey), his long distance relationship with Cassie and his family situation. In series 1 i didnt really rate Mike Bailey as an actor, but he has improved so much. Not that i know alot about acting, but this must have been really difficult to pull off, this episode was so focused on him. We barely saw anything of the rest of the group (Tony, Anwar and Sketch for a bit), so he did a great job.
2. shameless s05e09
shameless has been going downhill for a while, still funny, but its lack of kev, veronica, steve, fiona, sheila and lip seemed to mark the end. However, series 5 has been better than series 4, and this episode is the best for a long time. Monica (Anabelle Apsion) is usually really annoying and completely dislikeable character. However, the actress was so good in this episode, it really surprised me. It was a fantastic performance. Also, i found out Kev and Veronica might be returning towasrds the end of series 5! would be quality.
