old skool monday #16

...god mc...
SATURDAY!!!!
i had planned for a big glastonbury preview, and it may still happen...but there's lots to do today!

"Can't Knock the Hustle" is the third single from rapper Jay-Z's debut album Reasonable Doubt. The song features a beat produced by Knobody, co-produced by Sean C and Dahoud Darien, as well as a chorus sung by Mary J. Blige. Its beat contains samples from "Much Too Much" by Marcus Miller and "Fool's Paradise" by Meli'sa Morgan. Before the song begins, Pain in da Ass delivers a monologue from the 1983 gangster film Scarface. Jay-Z then proceeds to deliver mafioso lyrics about drug dealing and street life.

The song was originally supposed to have Latin singer Veronica sing the hook, but the more popular Mary J. Blige replaced her.[1] A live version of "Can't Knock the Hustle" found on the bonus disc of Kingdom Come features Beyoncé singing the song's hook. The songs beat has been heavily sampled by UK soul singer Lemar in his song 50/50"

pretty much definate that he'll play this on saturday with mary j blige coming on...

to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die

Death Cab have covered The Smiths again, but this time they do them justice. In a recent radio session, death cab played "there is a light that never goes out", one of the most beautiful smiths songs, the lyrics could quite easily be ben's. Death Cab are my favourite band of all time, and the Smiths are pretty high on my list, so for me this is brilliant!!

standing next to me (video)

on first listen i didnt appreciate just how good the album is, but it is fast becoming one of my favourite of the year. the last shadow puppets have further shown alex turner's talent and potential, and shown that miles kane can actually make good music. standing next to me is the new single, its probably about my 5th favorite off the album, but it is still quality. the above video is great.

old skool monday #15

apologies for the lack of posts, after wednesday (last exam!) there will be alot more including, new KoL, new (kindof) justice, old MGMT, NERD, lost, skins etc etc
i went for kings of leon this week, what a band, this was their first (i think) ever single.

"Molly’s Chambers" is the first single taken from the Youth and Young Manhood album by the American rock band Kings of Leon.

The title is taken from a line in Thin Lizzy's version of the traditional Irish folk song "Whiskey in the Jar".

"Molly's Chambers" was used in a 2003 Volkswagen commercial, depicting a young couple dancing in their apartment. Apparently, they are making too much noise, because they are kicked out, and after finding a house, they load up their VW, and move into their new home, and are seen at the end of the commercial, jumping up & down, as Molly's Chambers plays throughout the ad."

NEWS
2008-06-04 - NYC Shows in June and NEW ALBUM update!

There are 2 shows coming up in June in New York! First is with PG Six, Don Lennon and The Human Hearts (Feat. Franklin Bruno)...this is on 22nd June at Union Hall, Brooklyn. It is $7 and starts around 8pm. The next one is at Cake Shop on 27th June with our good friends The Dregs. This is an early show, starting around 6pm...and the good news is it's FREE! I will also be sitting in with the Dregs on a number or two, and Spencer will be sitting in with me on a couple of tunes. One other show is in the works...will keep you posted!

We will be in town finishing up the new record...just needs some tweakin' here and there. This will definately (hopefully!) be finished by the end of summer, and god willing, will be out by the end of the year...but you know how these things go! Lots of cool folks on the record, the odd collaboration here and there and lots of jangly pop songs...sorry it has taken so long!

forgot how much this guy is capable of. i think he is fairly big in america, but no-one knows him in the uk. used to be based in sheffield and played the polish club! about 6 months before i got into his stuff, typical.
here is the song leaving trains (that was played very faintly in the background in season one of the oc). it is still one of my favourite ever songs

rolex remixes

although the original has become pretty wearing, these 3 remixes are all very different to the original, and each other...they are all top stuff...hot chip also did a brilliant cover a few weeks ago, ill try and get that up sometime soon
Wiley-Wearing My Rolex (Pirate Soundsystem Bassline Remix)
Wiley-Wearing My Rolex (Zombie Disco Squad Remix)
Wiley-Wearing My Rolex (Burns Remix)

the zombie disco squad one is particularly good. still need to get round to listening to grime wave, but apparently its a bit shit. also, good news on the kano front, his new album will be produced in part by wiley and skepta and will be very grimey. i hope so.

i will be doing a big recap on all of lost season 4 sometime after the 18th of june, AND a summary/ music guide to both series of skins, with lots of nice links...

old skool monday #13

18 today!! its a special old skool monday for me, with one of the best songs of all time, from one of the best rap albums of all time, by the best (yes, better than public enemy) rap group of all time, its de la soul!!

"Eye Know" is a single from De La Soul's landmark album 3 Feet High and Rising. It peaked at number 14 on the UK singles chart.

Released during rap's Golden Age of 1986-1992, the song is an upbeat, feelgood love jam featuring a whistle sample from Otis Redding's "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay". The song also includes samples from Steely Dan's "Peg" and Sly & The Family Stone. At the time of its release, sampling laws were very liberal and the now-requisite task of clearing, or even obtaining permission, for using famous songs were almost non-existent. Nevertheless, "Eye Know" is much more famous for its poetically phrased musings on the wonders of love and of course for its pioneering sampling techniques."

the lyrics are truely brilliant. what a fantastic summery song. amazing. heres a sample

It’s I again and the song that I send Is taking steps to reach your heart Any moment you feel alone I can fill up your empty part We can ascend ’till we reach de la heaven And in a spin we’ll hit the top ten Then we will meet mr stuckie And pos’ brother lucky will preach Let the wedding begin Shot by an arrow of cupid Through the string of a g-clef My dear, I claim you’re def And if you can hear me, by golly gee, Trugoy is ready for what you posess We could live in my plug two home And on mars where we could be all alone And we make a song for two, Picture perfect things and I sing of how

jt remixes

After Justified (in all its Neptunes goodness), it would have been very difficult for justin timberlake to make a better album. The first album has so many stand out tracks; senorita, like i love you, take it from here, rock your body, right for me, lets take a ride, worthy of are all great pop songs. When the Timbaland produced Futuresex/love sounds (the name already puts a downer on it) came out i didnt like it, it was trying too hard to keep up with the times, all electro when he suits more chilled beats i think. anyways, when my love came put i changed my mind, what an amazing song, and then the next couple of singles were good, so i may have another listen to the album and see if my mind is changed. anyway, the new album is definitely suited to being remixed, and it has been many times, to great effect. here are a few examples
Justin Timberlake-My Love (RUF Dubstep Remix)
i dont like dubstep as a genre, but this is good
Justin Timberlake-Lovestoned (Justice Remix)
its justice, need i say more?
Justin Timberlake-My love feat. LCD Soundsystem (Diplo Remix)
Diplo mashes up my love with someone great.

seeing as Timberlake bums Timbaland so much, it looks probable that his 3rd album will get the Timbaland treatment, and probably feature Nelly Furtado...but it wont be out for a while
